Special pricing for India's research community — and the duty concession to go with it
Public-funded research institutions and DSIR-registered R&D units buy at dedicated prices from us — and are entitled to concessional customs duty on imported scientific instruments. We administer both, end to end, from quotation to your receiving dock.
Two categories qualify
Public-funded research institutions
Universities, national laboratories, publicly funded research institutions and non-commercial research bodies registered with the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR). Institutional pricing applies across the range — FTIR accessories, presses, dies, cells, consumables and instruments.
DSIR-recognised R&D units
In-house R&D centres of private companies holding DSIR recognition. The same recognition your centre holds for other fiscal purposes qualifies it for this programme — and for the import-duty concession.
Concessional customs duty, claimed properly
Customs notifications allow eligible institutions to import scientific and technical instruments at concessional rates of duty — materially below the full commercial burden. The conditions are specific, and the saving is only real when the paperwork is right.
- Valid DSIR registration (institutions) or DSIR recognition (private R&D units)
- An essentiality certificate for the specific import, signed by the head of the institution
- End-use for research — with records that support it
Rates and conditions follow the notifications in force at the time of import — we verify the live position and state it on every quotation, so the figure on your proforma is the figure that clears. Background reading: how the concession works.

Programme questions, answered
Who qualifies for research-institution pricing at Spectrolab Systems?
Two categories of Indian customers: public-funded research institutions, universities and non-commercial research bodies registered with DSIR; and in-house R&D units of private companies holding DSIR recognition. Both receive dedicated discount pricing across the Specac range and other supplied instruments.
What is the customs duty concession for research institutes?
Government of India customs notifications allow eligible research institutions and DSIR-recognised R&D units to import scientific and technical instruments at concessional duty rates, against a valid registration and an essentiality certificate signed by the head of the institution. Exact rates follow the notifications in force, and Spectrolab Systems confirms the current position on every quotation.
What is an essentiality certificate?
A certificate issued by the head of the eligible institution stating that the imported goods are essential for research purposes and will be used for research. It travels with the Bill of Entry to claim concessional assessment. Spectrolab Systems prepares the certificate text against the proforma invoice for signature.
Does the concession apply to FTIR accessories and sample preparation equipment?
Yes. Scientific instruments, apparatus and equipment imported for research — including FTIR sampling accessories, hydraulic presses, pellet dies, spectroscopy cells and analytical instruments — fall within the scope when the institutional conditions are met.
How do I claim the discount and the duty benefit?
State your category — public-funded institution or DSIR-registered R&D unit — when you request a quotation. The quote is built on the concessional basis, the certificate is prepared for signature, and customs clearance is handled in-house by the group's licensed customs broker, Bruce Logistics.
Can the institutional discount and duty concession be combined?
Yes. The duty concession is statutory; the institutional discount is Spectrolab Systems' own programme. Together they materially reduce the landed cost of research equipment.
