How to prepare KBr pellets that actually come out clear

A good KBr pellet looks like a small glass window. Most bad ones fail for one of three reasons — moisture, coarse grinding, or the wrong load on the press. All three are controllable. Here is the discipline in full.

The numbers that matter

  • Sample loading: 0.2–1% by weight. Roughly 1–2 mg of sample in 200–300 mg of KBr for a 13 mm die — about a 100:1 dilution. Too much sample and strong bands go flat-topped and unusable; too little and the spectrum drowns in noise.
  • Pressing load: 8–10 tonnes on a 13 mm die, held for one to two minutes. A 7 mm die needs only about 2 tonnes — which is exactly why a hand-operated press like the Specac Mini-Pellet Press exists for small pellets.
  • Particle size: finer than the IR wavelength. Grind to a homogeneous, flour-like, free-flowing powder; anything coarser scatters light and drags the baseline into a slope.

The procedure

  1. Dry your KBr and keep it dry. KBr is strongly hygroscopic. Oven-dry FTIR-grade KBr at around 110 °C, store it desiccated, and work quickly at the bench — doubly so in Indian coastal humidity and the monsoon months.
  2. Weigh and combine sample and KBr at the loading above.
  3. Grind in an agate mortar until homogeneous. Do not over-grind: excess surface area only invites moisture back in.
  4. Load a 13 mm evacuable die evenly, assemble, and pull vacuum. Trapped air is the main cause of laminated, fragile discs.
  5. Press at 8–10 tonnes for 1–2 minutes, then release slowly and eject with care.
  6. Inspect and measure promptly against a fresh pure-KBr background pellet; store finished discs in a desiccator.

The equipment behind a reliable pellet

Consistency comes from three items: a 15-tonne hydraulic press (Atlas class — manual for most labs, programmable Autotouch where operator-independence matters), a 13 mm evacuable pellet die in 440C stainless steel with a working vacuum port, and honest housekeeping — dry KBr, a clean agate mortar, a desiccator that actually gets used. Teaching laboratories running 7 mm pellets can do excellent work on the 2-tonne Mini-Pellet Press alone.
